In the spring of 2018, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM), in partnership with local emergency management agencies, launched the Know Your Zone hurricane and severe weather evacuation system following the findings of the Maryland Hurricane Evacuation Study. The study identified three major areas in Maryland that are vulnerable to tidal flooding during hurricanes and other severe weather events. Know Your Zone was developed to increase public awareness of evacuation zones, encourage residents to incorporate evacuation planning into their seasonal preparedness efforts, and streamline the communication of evacuation orders and notices during emergencies.
If you live, work, or vacation in one of Maryland’s coastal communities or near a waterway connected to the ocean, it is important to Know Your Zone. During a hurricane or other coastal emergency, local officials may issue evacuation orders based on designated evacuation zones. If your zone is ordered to evacuate, leave promptly and follow guidance from emergency management officials.
