SHELTER INFORMATION

Shelter Information

The local evacuation shelter is Washington Academy and High School, located at 10902 Old Princess Anne Road in Princess Anne. It is the only American Red Cross approved hurricane shelter in the county. It is a pet friendly shelter so you can bring your household pets (dogs, cats, birds, etc.) with you. Our shelter is staffed by nurses from both the Board of Education and the Somerset County Health Department. Personnel from Social Services, the American Red Cross, Board of Education, Somerset County Sheriff’s office, Somerset County Dog Control, Catholic Charities and volunteers round out the staff supporting shelter operations. The shelter will have limited supplies. You and your family will be much more comfortable if you bring your own.

What to Expect at a Public Shelter

Public shelters are noisy and often crowded. Privacy is limited and there is no access to showers. Alcohol is not allowed and misuse of drugs or medications is prohibited. Weapons are not permitted in the shelter and the school is a non-smoking facility. Law Enforcement is on site to enforce shelter rules and maintain peace.

Shelter resources and supplies are limited, priority use of the available cots and mats will be given to the elderly and infirmed. Access to outlets for charging devices will need to be shared. You will receive three meals a day, snacks and drinks.  You will need to register when you arrive and interpreters are available if needed.

Staying in a shelter is not something anyone wants to do but in an emergency it may be necessary. You may be in the shelter for several days. Remember to be respectful and considerate of others. Try to remain calm and offer help where needed. It may not be an ideal situation but try to make the best of things until the crisis passes.

Our goal is to keep you safe and as comfortable as possible while at our shelter.
