Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service
RACES concentrates on emergency and civil communications to support the safety of Somerset County residents. This can be used during large events like Crab & Clam Bake, Crab Derby or the Skipjack races, and during emergency situations. RACES acts as another layer of security to allow communications to continue if traditional communications such as phone lines are overwhelmed or down. Volunteers are trained and licensed to operate ham radios in what is commonly known as Morse Code to assist in relaying important messaging. They use specific radio bands that are different than emergency responders to create a separate support connection network to assist communications for Emergency Management and other government agencies. RACES also assist with communications during periods of severe weather events with trained weather spotters. Some volunteers work closely with Emergency Management Staff in the Emergency Operations Center while others are out in the field relaying messages throughout communities. RACES regularly conducts training and exercises to ensure their members are well trained and prepared.
